Fair Housing Symposium: Revitalization & Gentrification, Forces of Division or Diversity

​This day-long symposium covering current fair housing issues will:

  • Examine the history of laws and practices that initially created and supported segregated communities
  • Discuss the current challenges to limiting displacement and bringing equity to our communities
  • Explore examples of enforcement options, new efforts and local initiatives to support diverse, inclusive neighborhoods.

Panelists will include scholar activists, academics, government and policy experts as well as community organizers, representing a wide view of perspectives. 
  
Featured Speakers include:

  • Antero Pietila - Author of Not in My Neighborhood, an eye-opening book that outlines Baltimore City’s history of redlining.
  • Larry Gibson - UM Carey Law professor and author of Young Thurgood: The Making of a Supreme Court Justice.
  • Cheryl Janifer LaRouche - Author of Free Black Communities and the Underground Railroad: The Geography of Resistance, which employs the tools of archaeology to uncover a new historical perspective on the Underground Railroad.
     

Other panelists include:

  • Lisa Rice - Vice President of the National Fair Housing Alliance
  • Marisela Gomez - Author of Race, Class, Power and Community Organizing in East Baltimore
  • Glendora Hughes - General Counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights
